Survey Reveals Obstacles Hindering U.S. Cellphone Users from Embracing 5G

Table of Contents

A recent survey conducted by Speedtest shed light on the challenges faced by cellphone users in the United States when it comes to adopting 5G technology. While the majority of 3G/4G users expressed a desire to transition to 5G, they encounter various technical barriers that prevent them from doing so.

The Quest for 5G: A Glance at the Survey

In October 2021, Speedtest conducted a survey that aimed to gauge general customer satisfaction with cellular services, with a specific focus on 5G. The survey received responses from 2000 individuals, 1364 of whom were users of our 5G speed test, while 636 were yet to adopt the technology.

Unveiling the Roadblocks

The survey revealed the following reasons cited by 3G/4G users for not making the transition to 5G:

Lack of 5G-Ready Phones (35.2%)

A substantial percentage of users (35.2%) reported that they lack a 5G-ready phone. Some users feel bound by their contracts and hesitate to upgrade their devices due to concerns over device reliability and higher prices. On the other hand, early adopters tend to replace their phones every 18 to 24 months, underscoring the importance of flexible and affordable 5G phone upgrade deals.

Absence of 5G Coverage (29.0%)

Almost 30% of respondents explained that the absence of 5G coverage in their area is a major obstacle. These users eagerly await the expansion of 5G coverage to their location. It is crucial for cellular operators to enhance the rollout of 5G networks, particularly in smaller cities and towns, to pave the way for wider adoption.

Lack of 5G-Supporting Service Providers (6.3%)

Approximately 6.3% of respondents revealed that their service providers do not offer 5G support. Users in these areas lack access to an operator that can provide 5G services. Encouragement and better incentives from providers could potentially motivate users to switch to 5G-ready operators.

Satisfied with Current 3G/4G Service (18.7%)

Interestingly, 18.7% of users expressed satisfaction with their existing 3G/4G service, even without 5G capabilities. These users are content with their current service providers and do not feel compelled to switch.

In summary, a significant 70.5% of 3G/4G users face technical hurdles preventing them from adopting 5G. It is important to note that these barriers lie mainly within the control of service providers.

Other Key Findings

The survey also presented additional insights:

Price Concerns (8.4%)

A small percentage (8.4%) of respondents voiced concerns over the price of 5G plans. However, this factor does not appear to significantly deter adoption. Several affordable 5G plans, such as T-Mobile’s “Essentials” and Cricket Wireless’s “Unlimited,” offer good value for money, addressing this concern.

Health Worries (6.4%)

Health concerns surrounding 5G technology were expressed by 6.4% of respondents. However, these concerns seem to be less prominent in comparison to other obstacles. Industry studies focusing on the safety of 5G may contribute to easing these worries.

Collaboration to Overcome Technical Barriers

In conclusion, there is a substantial market segment in the United States that is eager to embrace 5G. To facilitate this transition, industry players must collaborate to overcome the technical obstacles hindering adoption. Service providers need to strategize urgent and robust 5G network rollouts and offer enticing phone deals. Regulatory bodies should monitor and support providers facing challenges, including pandemic-related delays and supply chain issues. By working together, we can usher in the era of 5G and unlock its full potential for users across the nation.
